chi running

I have always liked running and it has been an important part of my training as a dancer for years. But it wasn’t until I came across chi running that I started paying more attention to my running technique.

Many people are weary of running due to fears of injuring themselves. Danny Dreyer, the founder of chi running, believes that running can be pain-free. There is now also scientific evidence to show that chi running reduces the impact to the lower body and hence it decreases potential injury to legs and lower back. The chi running technique is based on the same principles as T’ai Chi. Chi is our vital energy, eminating from our core. Chi running encourages us to engage with our core during the run and to relax our limbs. It also emphasises the maintenance of good alignment throughout the body during the run in order to allow energy to flow more freely in the body.

Through chi running, I have learnt to run with less effort and in a more relaxed manner. What I enjoy about chi running the most is the same as that which I enjoy about the physicality of dance – for me it is about the process of becoming more in-tune with the connection between the body and mind.
